Your so right, bit by bit our rights are being eroded.I think there will be more riots like they had for the poll tax very soon!

What do you mean "becoming"? it's been a closet dictatorship for decades. Look at the Thatcher years and the poll tax - even mass civil unrest did little to change the mind of the resident dictator. Now we're having the same thing with road pricing policy - "make people pay to use Britain's roads!" Er, I thought that's what the road fund licence and the highest petrol ptaxes in Europe were for, or will these be dropped when the other thing kicks in? Then ther's all the Big Brother style cameras around, watching our every move.

The person who said " if you don't like the government, vote them out in the next election" is obviously very young and idealistic. There is no difference between the main political parties at the moment, and a change from Labour to Conservative would result in very little difference in the government policies being passed.

If you want a change for the better, do what my mate did last year - move to Australia! A sensible government with common sense policies and good weather!

Replacing one rotten potato with another is no solution, better the assembly that is elected to serve as a duty to the people, not as a career and a way to earn more than you deserve.

Accountability is the key, not toing the damned party line, or swanking the American dollar, or being impressed by Russian gold or any other such clap trap, but civic duty, fr the community.

We need to rewrite the system and take it away from the criminal elements.

Comment!

To some extent all democracies are dictatorships, they have to be otherwise nothing would ever get done! - Government would just end up being talking shop!.

The idea behind parliamentary government is that People elect other people to sit in parliament who then decide what's good for one and all. Mostly this idea works well and the majority of the people are happy enough!. "You can never please all the people all the time"!. so there are always malcontents.

Politicians of any party anywhere are a greedy lot!, They will always feather their own nest take freebe trip on expenses and generally look after their own /and party interests before doing what's right for the general public. They often disregard common sense , use people fears to pass ill thought out laws, while ignoring other more important causes for concern.

The ones in Westminster are self serving conniving often greedy hogs with fat noses stuffed into the gravy train called Westminster expenses accounts.. These people who we elected ought to know better! they bend the rules to suit themselves! - The recent vote about whether MPs should be accountable under the freedom of information act is a prime example of how they behave. (its one law for us and one law for them) .And brings the whole parliament into disrepute! - "No wonder people are loosing respect for the institution and those involved "...A African megalomaniac couldn't have contrived a better stitch up job.. Also The proposed road pricing act is another example of government not listening to the people who have elected it!. almost 2 million people signed that partition and yet the government still is going forward with the idea.

The thing is these people forget that what's given can all so be taken away!!. Anyone who disagrees with how government is run should use his/her vote next time to change things they should write directly to the prime minister saying that what you are doing is wrong and if you carry on like this you will not vote for that party in the next election. Also instead of sitting back and doing nothing send letters to MPs, or go along and see your own MP, tell him/her that you wont vote for them if they continue to forward bad laws.

Sadly though all the current major parties in parliament all seem to be tarred with the same brush and all jump onto the same ole political band wagon and so change will have to come by voting for a minor party who may not make power but who may very well hold a pivotal position in an hung parliament.

Only time ill tell..

This is in answer to gilders response.
You are of coarse correct with your answer.
However, it is only because we have an undemocratic system that this happens.
In elections recently the Govt. got into power with only 22% of all voters voting for them and to make this worse they had over 300 seats. The Conservatives had only a few less but actually need several percentage more votes to draw.
The poor Lib dem voters actually beat labour for votes cast in the past and come out with 10% of the seats.
The problem is that if in my constituency labour win by 1 vote all other votes are not counted.
We need a fair system of PR so that all votes count.
Then you will have 3 strong parties so that when one gets too full of themselves the others can vote against them.
Labour has changed borders so that it is harder to win every time.
In the meantime they bring in detention without trial. ( just a few years ago Peter Haine and Tony were boycotting S. Africa because of this law)
Take an unwilling country to war and try and force all sorts of crap fascist laws through.
So to answer your question YES I think that although they are not yet dictators they soon will be. He has already ignored several votes taken at conference. Now tell me that that is not undemocratic.

p.s. Thankyou for the additional info.

You live in a representative democracy. What that means is you vote of an MP, who, as a member of a political party, has a dual loyalty between your interests and the party interests. The latter nearly always wins.

Generally, since time immemorial, you voted once every four or years - and once only - for a government, who would then do as you please. This was described as an elective dictatorship, in that you had no further input in the in-between stages, and were at the government's mercy for the rest of the time.

However, that is the way it's always been - nothing has changed of late to make this any worse. Some would argue devolution has actually improved this situation.

As someone else said, if unhappy with the Government, vote against them next time round. However, whichever party you support, ALL of them that have held power at some stage in history have gone against the electorates' will.

But that doesn't make the country a dictatorship.

As anyone who's ever lived under one will quite happily explain to you.

p.p.s. You might want to lose a couple of zeros off that number you quoted - the UK may be a very crowded country, but it does not play host to 180 million people...

I've scrolled down and you all agree this country is not becoming a dictatorship it has been since Heath got us in EU and yet you only talk about it When is the true Brit going to stand up to this government or its successor and say enough is enough. This is not a nice place to live now and if i were younger i would not live here anymore

I'll tell you what Tony, we could do with an ultra strong dictator the way the country is going. Then maybe we can dump the EU and the New World Order and get back to British values. If we don't get off our bums and vote we will soon have an Islamic government and that would be a disaster. Do you English ladies want to wear a burka ?????

Sadly England has been under a dictatorship for a number of years now. There is no system which allows the public to voice its opinion. In addition the LabConLib party have co-operated in subjecting this country to the corrupt EU without a vote. Since subjecting us to the EU there have been over 110,000 directives forced on us without contest from Parliament

the government set up a lot of bullsh.t taxes, and put some reasoning behind it. Like all this global warming malarkey is a great excuse for them to raise taxes on cars and other things, even though it's gonna happen anyway, and a lot of people don't realize that. I'm fed up to the back teeth of elections and conservative parties and other parties, acting like they give a damn about people's opinions so they can try and get into parliament. The same thing's been happening for donkey's years... they suck up to us, they get into parliament, make promises, break promises, their reign in parliament goes downhill, they get voted out, and some other sucker comes in and repeats the process.

Brilliant question. I completely agree with you. I don't live in the UK, but in its neighbor Ireland, and I am reading such things about the UK in the news all the time. It is becoming a totalitarian place and in ways, is probably already the most totalitarian country in the world.
