Will a TH400 be a direct replacement for an early 700R4?

Similar but not the same....700R4 is electronic controlled, overdrive and the TH400 is vacuum controlled, three speed. The TH400 is a better transmission for towing and more severe operations but your gas mileage will suffer and you will have to make some modications to make it all work.

It not a direct replacement as mentioned. It will bolt up and work with a few mods.
I also will add, it will decrease fuel economy some as it a 3 speed and not have over-drive.

nope 700r4 is electronic and the 400 is vacumn
