i just bought a used gs500e...on my first weekend it was fine, but this weekend it kept stalling out. so i ran with the choke slightly on, and later increased the idle to 1k. was ok for a while, but than started stalling again. now i am set to 1.3k idle. should i get it checked out, or is it normal?

Clean out the carb or injectors, also by increasing the idle you run a chance of over heating. Suzuki is notorious for running hot so be careful. You may want to drop it of to have a tune up. It should cost a couple hundred for a good tune up. hope this helps.

You should never run a bike with the choke on - it forces it to run lean, and can really hammer your engine...

Anywhere from 900 - 1300 rpms sounds about right. But still - Id have the thing in for a service.... Could be your air filter is clogged and not allowing air through...

in case you like to advance it and advance it, purchase a used RGV 250 marvel. that's an on the spot replace even though it a tiny bit longer which will boost the rear, it additionally makes a great distinction to the handling of the bike, that's a great progression. I have been given mine for roughly £18 on ebay.

I'm with Guardrail.

You may have crud in your tank, if your gasoline is more than a couple of weeks old. Sometimes, when I think my gasoline is gone south (and I've gotten bad tanks right out of the pump), I fill up with premium and put about a quarter of a bottle of gas additive in the full tank.

1200rpm, nothing less.
It's always better for an engine to idle faster, rather that slower.
A slow idling engine will be struggling to stay running, putting a lot of strain and ware on bearings.
