I know that the Stars and Bars is the Confederate Flag and that the Stars and Stripes is the U.S. Flag... It is the symbolism that I am asking about.

I wouldn't think so... it's only historical revisionists and whining liberals who spout that sort of rhetoric. Also, the Union Jack is an active flag of a sovereign nation... the Stars and Bars (St Andrews Cross) is the flag of a failed rebellion from 142 years ago.

I'm sure there are Irish, Indians, and others who might debate the issue... I certainly wouldn't fly the Union Jack anywhere in India other than at the embassy.

Just FYI, the Union Jack is a combination of England's St. George's Cross, and the St. Andrew's Crosses of Scotland and Ireland.

And it IS the Union Jack: The Flag Institute, the vexillological organisation for the United Kingdom, asserts "the Admiralty itself frequently referred to the flag as the Union Jack, whatever its use, and in 1902 an Admiralty Circular announced that Their Lordships had decided that either [the Union Jack or the Union Flag] name could be used officially. Such use was given Parliamentary approval in 1908 when it was stated that "the Union Jack should be regarded as the National flag" ". The Merchant Shipping Act 1995 refers to the national colours of the United Kingdom as "the Union flag (commonly known as the Union Jack)…".

The term "Jack" derives from a flag flown from the bow-staff (or jack). The Navy flies the "WHITE ENSIGN" from the mast, and merchant ships fly the Pilot Jack!!

The Union Jack refers to the british flag.
The stars & BARS refers to the confederate flag, the now defunct seceded southern states of the US.
The stars and STRIPES refers to the US flag, which would be equivalent to the Union Jack.

It's actually the Union Flag as it is only the Union Jack when it is flown on a ship.
