walks and hits per innings pitched

lets say Roger Clemens throws 6 innings in his first game back (hypothetically speaking of course), gives up 6 hits, 3 walks, and 2 Runs, Both earned.

He'll have an ERA of 3.00 and a WHIP of 1.50

the league average for WHIP is about 1.36
anything better than 1.20 for a starter and 1.00 for a reliever are considered very good

WHIP is a category that means Walks + Hits divided by Innings Pitched. For example: Pitcher walks 1 guy, and 2 others get hits all in one inning. The pitcher only pitches one inning, the WHIP is 3 divided by 1, or 3 WHIP. Over 9 innings, with no other walks or hits, the WHIP would be 3/9 or .333 WHIP

WHIP is Walks + Hits % Innings pitched. A good WHIP means that a pitcher doesn't allow a lot of baserunners. If a pitcher goes 9 innings and allows 6 hits and 3 walks that would be a WHIP of 1.00. A pitcher with a WHIP of 1.21 has a better chance of winning a game than a pitcher that has a WHIP of 1.47 and those pitchers are valued more when it comes to fantasy play.

(Walks + Hits) / Innings Pitched.

Generally used as a Fantasy stat. just add the number of walks and hits together, then divide by innings pitched. The lower, the better.

(Walks + Hits) / (Innings pitched)

A good measure of how effective a pitcher is at keeping men off base.
