I have a problem with my monitor on my laptop. When I turn on my computer the display screen is so dark that the only way I can see the icons is to hold the computer under a lamp. I tried the brightness keys (fn + f2) to no avail. I have connected my laptop to a desktop monitor. It works perfectly. Please help me restore my laptop monitor.

Try this:
When you first turn your laptop on, but before it boots up, hit F8 on your keyboard to enter your system settings menu. When youve entered the settings menu looks for your dipsly settings options (When in the settings menu do not change ANYTHING except your display settings). In your display settings you should have the option to adjust the screen brightness. Turn the brightness to its maximum and save the settings. Boot your computer like normal.

If that doesnt work your screens lamp may be on its way to lcd heaven.

Good Luck1 (Hope this helps)

Mine does the same. I slap it on the right back of the screen and it gets bright again. Mine from the tight hinges I guess and opening it may have stressed something, but, for now I know how to make it work.

The display backlight, or the circuit that drives it, has failed.

It needs to be repaired by a qualified person.

If it is the backlight itself, then the entire panel needs to be replaced, the backlight is integrated into the panel and can not be easily removed from it.
