I have a '95 Yamaha Virago that has been in the shop for a new starter since May 1. It took a couple days before the diagnosis, then 7 days to get the wrong part, etc etc etc. Had they received the right part, it would be a two-week repair for the most common problem with this year of my bike.

Is this sort of repair time excessive? Typical?

The Virago is my first bike, and this is my first time to deal with repairs. My experience with cars is that nearly any repair can be done the same day. I know that an older bike may require a special part order, so I am struggling with what a reasonable expectation for repair times should be. For all I know, three weeks+ is great service.

In other words, should I look for a different shop the next time I need repairs?

Please note, that the shop got the wrong part a week after ordering. However, it was the wrong part so that set back the repair by a further 7-10 days.

Also, after getting the wrong part, it was a couple days before they attempted to install it; work orders seem to take a couple days to make it to the work stage.

Most bikes aren't too difficult to work on if you're a shade tree mechanic. Usually the biggest problem you'll run into is the specialized tools that you'll need. Metric bikes like to use lots of oddball sized nuts & bolts.

If something big goes wrong with my bike I typically figure it being down for two weeks to get parts on order and delivered. There are a lot of good bike forums out there. My FZR forum has saved my **** numerous times from having to buy brand new OEM parts, and eBay as well.

Wouldn't hurt to give your dealer another try. This time of the year is busy for bike repairs. That does seem a bit long to get it back, but if they're swamped I guess you can't hold that against them too much. If it happens again, start looking for another shop.

Yes, I would look for a different shop. They should be able to get any part for a '95 model within two weeks max. I have no trouble getting parts for my '81 Seca at my Yamaha dealer, usually in three or four days.

Find a different shop.
Because of their first order mistake, they should have over-nighted the part to satisfy their customer.
Contact Yamaha and file a complaint .

Before doing so, ask the shop to compensate you (lower the bill, or give you a free oil change down the road).
If they won't deal, wait till you get your bike out of there till you contact Yamaha.
