I made reservations at the Sophia Hotel near downtown San Diego, CA - good prices, location, and from their website and reviews seems nice. Just spoke to a friend who works just blocks from there and they said the hotel was recently renovated, but there were prostitues and drug dealings right in front. Any one stay here before, or know of a better place to stay?

It was former Pickwick next to bus station, and was always nice inside, but also subject to downtown scene - this is San Diego-
nothing approaching other downtown areas!
Sure there are better locations without these distractions -
including downtown auto/bus, boat, trolley, train and siren noise-
likely nearby or in Mission Valley locals at similar cost.

I don't really know anything about the Sophia Hotel.

There are some great hotels located right on the beach in Coronado, Pacific Beach, Mission Bay, and La Jolla. Learn more about them at: http://www.sandiego-romantics.com/san-diego-beach-hotels.html
