The KT400 chipset supports Athlon XP, Sempron, and Duron processors (Socket A), not Athlon 64 (Socket 754 or 939). It looks like a Barton 3000+ is as high as you can go.

WOW a KT 400 chipset! havent seen one of these in a while..
ok, socket A processors are no longer in production, and the only ones that are in production are the hugely cut down semprons. so eBay me thinks!

I believe your board only supports up to an FSB of 333, in which case any processor will do, but you will never see the full potential of the chip

The 2600+ is a very good chip, and if it can be found, look for the one with a Barton core. It is highly overclockable (if your into that kind of thing) if not, then it is still one of the most stable chips out there.

Just thought I'd add this:
In the home business that i run with my dad, we have found that a brand new Vista ready machine, with 64 bit compatibility costs no more then £350, it sounds alot, but keep in mind you get:

AM2 mobo
AM2 processor (3600+)
512mb 4600+ RAM
250GB SATA hard drive
ATI x1050 PCI-E graphics card.
Tower
550W PSU
16x DVD Dual Layer burner

unfortunately the sky high price of vista pushes the price up, but this is still an option to keep. Since the machine described above is fairly new, and will be for some time, so perhaps its worth spending some pennies and getting a PC that's newer, rather then keeping a PC, which is all but out of date.

It appears the you have a socket "A" motherboard. It should support all AMD XP processors up to 2.2 gigs (AMD XP 3200). Look in your MOBO manual for details on your particular board.

Right now I know of no place to acquire an AMD socket A processor outside of possibly E-bay. They have be discontinued for some time now.

Also, if you decide to do this change, check your CPU cooler. The upper end AMD XP processors tend to run a bit hot.

The board will support any Socket A AMD processor.

You could go to a 1.6 but you are not going to see a speed difference. The mother board bus speed is to slow to upgrade to anything larger. It is really cost prohibited to do this type of upgrade. It would be cheaper to buy a new pc. Get a ton of memory as that is really where you see your speed unless you are running something like autocad.
