Little blighters, I left a stick of chalk out and a tiny pebble out and they just gone and had a game of hop-scotch when my back was turned !!
I think they're not keen on the calcium in the chalk and tend to keep off it.

Yes, it is true but I don't know why. I have made a chalk line and watched and the ants wouldn't cross it. I didn't find it effective for pest control though because rain washes away the chalk.

Ants cannot see well. You will notice that they travel in a line, actually following an ooze trail left by the ant in front of them. Next time you see a line of ants, run your finger between two of them and watch all the ants at the back get confused.
So, yes, they will not cross a chalk line.

I haven't had much luck in that department. Once a friend suggested baby powder but all that did was leave little ant footprints all over the floor. Another suggestion is to use bay leaves. A friend of mine is an organic farmer and uses bay leaves all around her house. She does not have ants in her house. I'd say that's a good suggestion. Fortunately, I don't have the ant problem in my new location so I haven't had a chance to try it yet. Good luck.

no they would probably eat it ..BUT amazingly enough what they wont cross..is DUCK TAPE ..you know that silver tape that you see in builders merchants ..recently in France i went to a display and there was this box with 100000 ants in it ..there was no cover to stop them from getting out ..but on the inside of this box around the inside at the top was this duck tape ..and not one ant would attempt to go over it ..sound a good thing to wrap around the base of trees

Through experience-we had ants all through our apartment and you put a line of black pepper in front of your doors - they will not cross it and it keeps earwigs out as well

Most likely, yes. Make it dark enough and they cannot cross. Very rarely they do pass. Ive tried it, and only 2 of 100 passed. (somehow)
