Although initially both sides on the Civil War claimed that the cause for the war was state's rights, whether or not a state could secede from the Union, the ultimate consequence and therefore importance of the Civil War was providing freedom to the slaves and thus fulfilling the promise of the Declaration of Independence that: "All men are created equal". The struggle to achieve equality by the new recognized citizens of the United States will continue for 100 years and culminate with the recognition of their Civil Rights in 1965 by legislation signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson. We are still trying to achieve a measure of equality in this country and thus, we can say that the Civil War still continues, not in the battlefield, but in the hearts and souls of every American citizen that values equality and freedom.

the causes of the civil war were that they wanted state governmenttation which means the staes govern themselves and the federal government to handle major issues such as peace and war. The fact that another cause was the union wanted them to stay together as a country. A minor issue was the slavery. it had almost no influnce on the war

It was a mistake to fight a war to keep the Union together, the agrarian plantation based South has always been a drag upon the economically developed industrial North and it should have been allowed to secede peacefully.

Just don't answer "to free the slaves." That was a slick one they dreamed up to obfuscate the REAL reason - MONEY.
