Not to defend Hitler, but you have to understand the mindset of that time: the U.S. foreign policy didnt much promote intervention of international affairs, unlike today, and when Hitler rose to power he was very much embraced by Germans because he was considered to have single-handedly bring Germany out of their depression due to the effects of WWI and restored their economy

It was the same story as throughout history. Everyone was hoping that there really wasn't a problem or if there was it would just go away. Deep down though everyone knew it was only a question of time before war. Just putting off the inevitable would be the best answer.

At that time we were not the policeman of the world, so we tended to let Europe take care of its own problems.
