A lot of people pick on the Christian Religion, Mormon, Muslim teachings, etc.

But why is Buddhism more accepted today in our society in Western and Eastern cultures?

There are several reasons for this:

First of all, the East is much more “open” than it used to be. So people have had more opportunity to experience Eastern Philosophies.

Second: Buddhism is not really a religion. You are not asked to believe anything. You don't even have to believe a God, Heaven, or Hell. It also does not have all the politics that people are tired of dealing with, that is rampart in Western religion.

Third: People are tired of so many religious groups trying to convert them. Buddhist don’t try to convert anyone.

Forth: Buddhism is inherently non-violent. There have never been any Buddhist holy-wars or crusades (so needless to say extremist are few and far between).

Because Buddhism is based on the teachings of a REAL person who believed in the sanctity of every living thing and preached acceptance.

The other religions, Christianity, Judaism, Mormons to name a few are based on some imaginary Friend who probably didn't exist and taught hatred for anyone who thought or acted differently.

Islam may be based on a real figure, but the teachings in the Quran are very militant and the main belief is to kill everyone who is not a Muslim... they TEACH that it is OK to kill the INFIDEL.

I was born, raised and educated in the Catholic Church... and I HATE organized religion and have been a practicing ATHEIST for the past 50 years. BUT... if I EVER decided to embrace a formal religion again, I would become a Buddhist... because I believe in their religious tenants.

Some of Buddha's saying sound like Christ and aren't too controversial on the surface. Some are cryptic and hard to understand let alone argue against. Most of what I've seen has been pretty universal. They don't have enough followers to get up a good war. The three religions with the most followers are Chritian, Muslim and Hindu. Mormons get in trouble because other Christians don't like them introducing another book than the Bible. It's a civil war. Also Buddhist's seem more laid back, and to be more involved in spirituality than politics and arguing.

Because with Buddhism you don't have the necessarily believe in a God figure. So you end up having to take responsibility for your actions. I know one guy who is Buddhist and he has the biggest superiority complex I've ever met in a person. doesn't mean all people that are Buddhist are like that though.

Because Buddhists don't try to shove their teachings down your throat at every opportunity they have. The basic teachings also make more sense and are not oppressive, guilt-laden, or apocalyptic. Buddhism also requires that people answer only to themselves in the form of personal responsibility, instead of answering to somebody else.
