I hate it that people who acutally go out and work for there money has to pay for there sorry butts I think that they should all get a life...

No. There will always be some in our society that need and deserve a hand up. The main problem with our system is it doesn't always seem to be based on providing welfare to those that deserve it.

I like the system they have in Japan. The society their feels everyone must contribute to the betterment of themselves and the country, so they just make sure every able bodied man and woman possible has a job. Of course they shun anyone who is irresponsible and is a drag on society. Their unemployment is kept very low in this way, and more people at least feel they are productive and an asset to society.

The other extreme is Mexico which has no welfare program to speak of and you are just on your own. You only have your family and friends to count on when your down. This and a poor economic system is why so many want to come to the US. This system is inhuman. There will always be some in society needing help for some reason.

I don't think our society will accept either of the above. We seem to be unwilling to hold any ones feet to the fire when they act irresponsibly and put themselves and their children in jeopardy. We would never just leave people on the streets on their own. Oh, I know you can always find a specific case where this is not true, but in general most poor people have access to food, housing, and medical care when they need it.

There are many that abuse the system. This is true. However, There are those people that are on disability.. who without it couldnt support their families. People who appear to be able to work a full time job. But really cant. People with severe problems such as seizures, OCD manic depression ect ect... those people look fine and healthy.. but it is very very difficult for those kinds of people to deal with the public.

example: there have been cases.. where some people that were diagnosed with certain phobia's couldnt leave their homes. Those people couldnt survive if it were not for the government giving them money to help them along.

You are speaking of people abusing the system. I think if the welfare policies were done away with.. to many people would suffer.. and that would be worse than the ones who are abusing the system in the first place.

welfare does not give THAT much money to those people. It gives just enough for them to survive on. Barely survive. So I say dont cut it. it would hurt more people in the end than it would help. And for those that abuse it. make the laws tougher so that wont happen.

Welfare is not an evil institution. its there to help those that REALLY need it. the problem comes in when a few people abuse it.

A complete overhaul is needed.
Putting a cap on how much money they get regardless of how many children they have.
Maybe giving a monetary incentive to take birth control.
Easier process to obtain student loans or grants for education, either college or trade school that offers job placement.
Cutting back on other welfare programs to finance the child care.
Having children of minor parents placed in foster care until the parent can sustain themselves.
This is just a few of my ideas..I am sure If given the time I could come up with many more.

I don't know about being done away with but better checks and balances need to come into play. I used to work in government assisted housing and saw people on welfare paying only $50 in rent yet driving around in Expeditions and Cadillacs, sporting $100 fingernail jobs. A lot of the kids grow up thinking that they'll never have to work, that once they're in the system, everything will be paid for. There is a definite abuse of the system and these people need to be weeded out.

Your question suggests that you presume that the taxpayers are the victims of Welfare. This is incorrect.

I've had the privilege of knowing nine self-made millionaires in my life well enough to get their real life stories. They didn't all stay married to the same person, they weren't in similar businesses, they didn't share the same religion, they weren't all caucasian males, there was only one thing they all had in common. Every single one of them reached a point in their lives where they had what I call "the Popeye moment". That was where they decided "that's all I can stands, I can't stands no more" and decided to do something about their circumstances. Some people call this reaching "natural bottom". If you've seen the movie "Pursuit of Happyness", you might be able to determine the precise moment when Will Smith reaches that point, and his wife simply never does.

People who are "caught" by the "safety net" of Welfare often are denied the opportunity to hit bottom. It would be tragic if even a single one of them would have bounced back and made something of themselves, but never reached a point where things were so bad they demanded action.

So, while I agree that Welfare should be ended totally, I get there because of what it does to the recipients. It's a very evil institution.

What?do away with welfare? What is the mexicans going to do when they get amnesty and get their rights, someone has to support them when they want more money than they are getting. They to get here,Have to learn get a illegal job then get a big fat white girl, have babies out of this world. You can't possibly be serious about getting rid of welfare.Twenty percent of these dead beat dads would have to take some of these jobs our government say americans will not take, the other eighty percent would just go to prison where they can study and get a college education that I could never afford. What is wrong with this whole picture?

I believe that the government has a responsibility to its citizens. Some kind of safety net to help people get back on their feet and survive is needed in this great country. That was the purpose of the welfare system.
What we have created is a dehumanizing system that rewards everything that the country (at least the majority) is against. Unwed mothers. Children having children. A system that does not give incentive toward education, work, marriage, etc.
To do away with the welfare system is not acceptable to me. But we need to set up the net in a way that rewards initiative, families, education, drive to improve and does not leave people with a stigma of "lazy, worthless, deadbeats". We need to set up a way for people to get out of the system with dignity, drive, and character.

I think it should be regulated more. Some people would need welfare. Someone with a disability, a Vietnam Vet, even someone who has been in drug rehab or even in jail and is a rehabilitated criminals (I think the latter two should have time limits, however, with stipulations to receive benefits).

But just because you have kids, then no, you should work and be able to support your kids. The problem is that if you take welfare away, the kids suffer, not the adults.

Yes, I do believe they should take welfare away. While we work our butt off to bring home a check there are people sitting at home doing nothing and still receiving a check. My boyfriends sister works at a bus barn. She barely makes $1,000 a month. She has a 2 year old child. She wont find a better paying job because she receives welfare.
