I took real lessons I want to say starting when I was 4, I was your average suburban housing boom product with my parents trying to get me into the American Dream. I was probably swimming with floats before that but of course I remember very little of that at all.
But the funny thing is I started taking real lessons when I was about 4 yet most of the kids on the swim team with me started out a lot younger, some even at age 2 got into some programs yet I'm probably going to qualify for states this upcoming season plus I'm on like an AP program for swimming if that's possible! I don't know how I do it but I get some good times.

Learning to swim takes a long time in my opinion. It takes a long time to be a good swimmer. My parents always had me near water when I was very little so I grew up around water. I was very comfortable in water. I then took swimming lessons and I was usually the youngest child in my classes. I continued to take swimming lessons until I joined the swim team. Joining the swim team helped me improve my technique.
If you are looking to swim I would recommend finding a proper instructor. A teacher will be able to assist you way more than if you are trying to learn on your own. I hope this helps!!

My mother bought lessons for me at a community pool in IL when I was about 6 y/o. But I really didn't become a proficient swimmer until we moved to GA and had a pool in our yard that I swam in every second possible. I believe that exposure is the ticket to being comfortable swimming and then instruction can be utilized. I currently teach adults that have never learned to swim how to swim from step 1 and continue at their pace until they can learn. The adults who are more comfortable and come to the pool more often are the ones that progress faster.

My mom had me in the pool the day I was brought home from the adoption agency. I was 3 months old. I learned by being in the water and my mom teaching me. I mostly played and listened to my mom and figured it out for myself by mocking my mom. By the time I turned two I could dive in the deep end unassisted. Guess it makes sense that I'm now a competitive swimmer, triathlete, swim coach and swim instructor!!!

I took swimming lessons for 2 weeks when I was like 8.. (I had to take it over when I was about 12 because I alwyas complained about the water being too cold!) We started off in the shallow and practiced kicking, and doing breast strokes, and all the other stuff, then we learned to tread water.. and when it was time to go to the deep end they just told us to jump in and kick our feet and I just came up, and treaded water and ta-da.. the teacher was in the water I was scared and thought I was going to drown when it was my first time going to the deep end but it wasn't that bad! It was nothgin to it really. The hard part is swimming in the ocean.. in rough water that is really tough and you need to be a strong swimmer.. i get tired fast so I cant do it!

When I was a kid my mom signed me up for lessons. I got better over the years by spending my summers at the pool.
