I carry a 9-mil semiauto handgun. It's small, the recoil isn't bad, and it's got pretty good stopping power.
*UPDATE* stupid hippies. If someone pulls a gun on you, I think you'll find yourself overmatched. In fact, I can't fathom a plausible scenario where a samauri sword would be helpful...

I have a weapon I carry with me always, it is called my brain. Do I need a gun to feel safer? No. Bad things happen all the time but if you spend your life worrying about what is around the corner, it is not much of a life. Before all the "hawks" start their thumbs down, I served in the military as did my father and grandfather, my 21 year old son has been in the reserves since 16. I have nothing against guns. I will never have a gun in my home. I can get all the food I need at the local grocery stores. If I feel the need to hunt, I take a bow and arrow to at least give what I am hunting a chance. Having a gun just because you can makes no sense to me. Accidental shooting in the home because a child finds it is criminal and locking up the ammo makes a mockery of having it in the first place. Excuse me, Mr. Robber, I have to go to the basement to unlock the ammo for the gun I need for protection....A brain is a dangerous weapon, guns cannot think....

I have a carry and conceal permit, in the Summer, I carry a Walker Bulldog .44 mag. Revolver 2 in barrell,
In the Winter I carry in a shoulder harness a .45 cal. Para 1911.
I f I could not carry a gun, it would be a Gladious sword.
(the type of sword used by Gladiators in ancient Rome)

I always carry the most effective weapon I can at all times. That weapon is a brain. I know how to avoid placing myself in vulnerable situations, I am constantly aware of my surroundings and avoid confrontation. I admittedly do not live in the safest area, however have somehow never found myself to be a victim by having street smarts. Prevention is the most powerful weapon a person has to offer.

I have a concealed weapons permit. Carry one in each vehicle. Glock 17 9mm and S&W 357. It's better to have a gun and not need it than need a gun and not have it.

I have carried mace since college. That is good enough for me.
However, if it got to the point where I thought I needed a gun to keep my family safe, I would get a small handgun.

I wouldn't need a permit because it wouldn't be concealed, My weapon of choice is a 12 ga shotgun. It's obvious presence is deterrent enough

I usually carry my .38 but there are times when I choose the slimmer design of my 9mm.
