i think it really depends on what the first one was like. like be cool was suppsosed to be a sequal to pulp fiction but i hated it.

Not generally, and even when the sequel is really awesome, it's still not quite as good as the original. Some good examples though are:
Indiana Jones
Spider Man
DieHard
Star Wars (somebody already said this, they were all entertaining and good until the last one which sucked.)
With action/adventure movies it seems to be easier to still please the audience the 2nd, 3rd, 4th times around.
And we shouldn't forget Harry Potter movies either. Although geared towards a younger crowd, they are all good movies and the sequels never let you down.

Cat don't think so. For instance, Gone With The Wind and whatever they called the sequel to it, written back in the 80s or early 90s, I think. I didn't even take it home. I looked at it at the book store (on the clearance table yet) and left it lay. It was sad.

Yes, Austin Powers got better and better each time they put out a new one. This is the only case I can think of off the top of my head. I have been disappointed numerous times by sequels.

Almost never. This holds true for books, music and movies. I would agree with the person above that LOTR is one rare exception. =)
