Consumers Reports tested numerous brands a while back and listed the top rated (based on frequency of repairs) as;
American Standard, Trane, Rheem.......Rated in the middle werre York, Carrier, Lennox.
Rated at the bottom and not recommended was anything by GOODMAN.
Ask your HVAC companies for the warranties included with the purchase. Standard 80% AFUE furnaces should have a 20 year warranty on the heat exchanger. Hi-Efficiency furnaces should all carry a LIFETIME warranty on the heat exchangers. Central Air should have a 10 year warranty on the compressor.

Make your selection based on the best service and parts available. Carrirer, Lennox & Trane are perhaps the best known brands, and are easy to service. Goodman is a separate animal & I personally would avoid them. Altho a local rep. would argue with you. York is a good model for heavy commercial applications. Stay away from Bradley, they are a lower brand of Carrier. Don't be fooled by seer & eer ratings. Seer is seasonal rating and eer is operating efficiency watts to btuh ratings. Go with Carrier or Lennox if the price is within a couple of hundred dollars..

Just giving another vote against Goodman. It has an aluminum condenser coil instead of copper with aluminum fins. All the other should have a copper coil with aluminum fins. It's not a real big deal until your lawnmower picks up a small rock and chucks it thru the soft aluminum coil.

Whatever brand you decide make sure the unit is sized correctly. A unit that is too large will cycle frequently and not remove enough humidity from the house. If it is too small it will have to run longer to cool the house.

American Standard which is owned by Trane has the best units that are the most efficient.
