Gary, you also forgot that Clinton did not support this war, so it means nothing, though I know the Clinton-did-it-too chorus is in full swing.

About the draft, well if we don't need it now, then I don't know when we would ever need it. According to Bush, we are in the Epic War to Save Western Civilization as we know it. If Americans who support this war and their country aren't willing to serve to protect her interests, then how can they call themselves patriots? People who say we would do well with an all-volunteer army are the same folks that cravenly cheerlead this disaster from the sidelines. It's ok to send other people off to die, but you won't see them put a toe on the battlefield. The draft would be an effective way to get the numbers that we need to secure Iraq. Once Iraq is secure, we can begin to rebuild infrastructure and the Iraqis can build their government. Of course this would also be nation building, and prior to Bush, conservatives couldn't stand for such a thing when Clinton was helping over in Kosovo. Funny how everything changes in 6 years.

If having a draft would make an endless supply of our finest young men and women available to the whim of idealogue-war mongers from either side then NO, we should not have a draft.
If on the other hand, a full, honest and complete draft- where rich and poor, and powerful and powerless- without exemption, all spend a certain amount of time serving this nation, at war, in civil defense, in the service of veterans, education and poverty then I say YES, it is time for the draft.
As the rift between the haves and the have-nots widens in this country, what a benefit, I think, it would be to have nearly everyone, of every race and religion, of all economic levels and faiths, and from every corner of the country, in their early 20's, spend time together and get to know where each of us has come from and where we are coming from.

There should be no military draft.

All men and women American citizens 19-25 should have to serve the country in some capacity. There should be a 2 year service obligation. Everyone should have to spend 2 years in the America Corps, Peace Corps, Military or some service organization.

By cowards you mean people who expect to keep their civil rights?

I tried to join the military twice-once after high school and once after 9/11. I was unable both times.

I would leave this country in a second if they started a draft for anything other than protecting us on our soil. I do not think that makes me a coward, it makes me free. I chose not to be forced to go to war for something I dont believe in, and I will stand up for that-forfeiting my US citizenship if need be (happily in fact, because that will show me that the US is no longer what it was started as).

Ever hear of the Crimean War? You cant fight for freedom elsewhere while forcing your people to go fight-its ridiculous.

No. We should have a citizens militia of the sort spoken of in the second amendment to the Constitution. Every able bodied citizen should have a weapon and know how to use it. When a situation arises in which the U.S. actually needs to defend itself--as opposed to imposing its will on other sovereign nations like Afghanistan and Iraq--a church bell will ring, or an alarm will go off, and every citizen will grab his/her weapon and assemble in a central location. This is what that atheist commie Thomas Jefferson wanted.

If we have the kind of foreign policy we should have, the situations where this will be needed should be few and far between.

I think if we will start up the draft, the war will be 100 times more unpopular. Look back at Vietnam war.

We are asking our government about what are we doing in Iraq and our brave soldiers are volunteers. Image what will happen if we will draft 18 plus?

At this juncture in history, the draft is not a good idea. There are too many people in this country who don't support the war and to send non-volunteers into a war would be wrong. So many cons say this is a "volunteer army" and it is. It should stay that way. Mr. bush got us into this mess and it's not up to unwilling soldiers to fight his major screw-up.

No way I dont think so my husband is in the army and if there was a draft he would not only have to take care of his people that have trained to be there but have to take care of those who were forced to be there and not care what happens to the other soliders if they started a draft I would hate to know that they were going to be put with our real soliders.

Yes and all those who ask for it to be started up like the democrats get to be head of the line without any expections.

Draft is a red herring to make our military unpopular like it was in Vietnam.
