My son recently returned from the US from Windsor Ontario where he had been living for the past 3 years. The reason for going to Ontario in the first place was to meet a girl he had met on the internet. They eventually married, and had a son a year later. The boy is now 17 months old, and I have yet to even meet him. They were all supposed to come this past Feb. so I could have my chance to meet and get to know my grandson. Unfortunately, it didn't work out that way. Instead, my son's ex told him that it was over between them. So he came back alone. The problem here is the expense of transportation for both families. She won't put the child on a plane alone, and I really don't blame her. My heart is breaking here. I only have pictures to look at. It's very depressing. I just hope I get to my grandson soon.

Take the amtrak sleeper train, it's cheaper. The mother will be far more willing to let you see the child if you take the trip than expect it to be the other way around.
An 18 month old can talk on the phone too. Start calling every week at the same time so that the child looks forward to your calls. Send pictures of yourself, and video if you can. Make a webpage with pictures of the child, etc., and give the web address to the mother. She can show the child pictures that way too, and the child will be excited to see pictures of him/her self, as well as begin to associate your picture with your voice. Make sure to take a picture of you holding a picture of the child!

Hi Gladys, I see the difference between courting, as you described, and dating. Dating seems not to be a serious thing...go out and do whatever and if you don't like the other, dump them. I believe that is one reason for the high divorce rate. Men haven't been taught the proper way of courting, and our young ladies don't know what to expect either. I saw a change in church some 20 years ago. The youth group wanted to teach the young ladies the art of dressing and make-up. But the young ladies wanted to go shooting like the guys. Maybe the "woman's liberation" movement had some to do with it too. "Equality??". I am gald that men and women are different!

I am so sorry for you. You should be able to hold your grandbaby in your arms and shower your love on him! Having an extended family is so good for children, especially grandparents.
If I were you, I would be looking day and night for cheap flights to Ontario. You don't have to take the whole family, just you or you and your husband could go. If you can't afford it, check bus lines. (I don't know if that is even an option) If you are active in a church perhaps you could speak to your Pastor, maybe your church community could help you out with paying for a trip. Good luck, and God bless.

You have no legal rights. In fact, Canada, where the custody/visitation/support case will be heard (home state rule) does not allow for a grandparent to sue for visitation.

Therefore, it's time to have a 'come-to-jesus' with sonny boy about his obligations and responsibilities regarding his son.

Also, the airlines would not allow the child to fly alone until age 5. Most will not allow a child to file alone internationally until age 14.

I am sure your heart is breaking. Is there any way that you could meet somewhere in the middle? That way the expense wouldn't be as much?? Hopefully your son will try to get some sort of visitation with his son and you can begin building your bond. God bless!

I'm sorry to hear your story. Isn't there something in your son's custody case where he gets visitation? My brother and I had to go to Alabama from Indiana a couple of times every year. Why don't you see what's going on there and offer to babysit your grandchild during your son's visitation. I doubt that any court is going to make it to where you can only see him in Canada. If that doesn't work call a lawyer and see what your rights as a grandparent are. Good luck.

You can't put a 17 month old on a plane alone. Doesn't your son have any legal rights to his son?

It it would be better for you to make the visit and save the transportation expense. Seeing faraway places would be a worthwhile experience.
