Good question, I'm a North Dakota "Master Gardener"and my fingers and thumbs are always dirty. Maybe it should be changed to "dirt thumb".

I believe the term you are relating to is called green thumbed.

Plants are green and a person who gardens works with their hands a lot in the garden.

growing, live plants are usually green. Having a green thumb means you can grow just about anything in every type of situation. Just like a black thumb means you cannot keep anything alive.

At the moment I am green fingered with squashing the pesky greenfly, they are everywhere!!! Maybe that is where it comes from??

not a clue because my fingers are always black when i finish in garden.enless i.ve mowed the lawn n cleaned my lawn mower and loads of people mow the lawn even when they don,t like gardening.
