I did the "power options" thing but it doesn't help. I use windows vista and I don't know how to get to BIOS either.

Depending on your operating system, I go to control panel and choose Hardware and Sounds, then choose Power Options, click on advance settings, choose power buttons and lid, it would give you three options, choose lid close action, click on plug in and choose "do nothing".

It sounds confusing, but once you are there, I am sure, you would be able to resolve your issue,
Good luck!

Go into the Control Panel and look for the "Power Options" icon
Go to the Advanced tab

Look for the "When I close the lid of my computer" option near the center of the window. Change the action to what you really want to happen (Usually "do nothing")

On the left sidebar In the "Choose what closing the lid does" option, select "Do Nothing" for Battery and AC Power. This will ensure that the computer does not shut down after you close the lid.

This will be seen if your using windows :)

Go to start > control panel > appearance and themes > display > screen saver tab > click the power button > find where it says where you shut your lid on your laptop and select the option in the dropdown list to do what you want it to do. More than likely it is not shutting down it is going into sleep mode. Good Luck HTH.

Because that's the way it's been set up?

Check in the bios and in Windows to see what it does with the lid close switch. It's probably in Windows... but you may be able to turn the switch off in the bios.

Set it to turn off the screen when the lid is closed if you want it to cary on running.

Go to Start, Settings, Control Panel, Power Options. Cllick on the Advanced Tab and change your settings to "close lid = do nothing".

This happens because maybe in the BIOS it is setup to do just that. Go into your BIOS and see if this is so. Change such settings according to the way you wish the Laptop to behave when you close the lid.

Check your power settings. (Start -> Control Panel -> Power Options -> Advanced

You might want to change it to standby, or hibernate instead.
Laptops come out of the factory many times with these settings on so you will save power when not using it
