Yes, shrubs and bushes, especially the kinds with pickers make great nesting and protective areas for birds. Rock walls and gardens encourange small critters like chipmunks. Food sources such as butternut tree's, berry bushes, fruit tree's provide food for woodland animals and of course, a water source. A small pond not only supplies drinking water but will attract frogs. There are also specific foods you can buy to attract a variety of animals, not sure if you want skunks, fox, possums and such?

Be prepared to let your yard go natural. Plant plants that will product flowers and berries for birds and squirrels.

Put up bird feeders, for different types of birds. They take different types of foods.

There are owl houses and bat houses (they eat mosquitoes and other bugs).

On our acre and a half we have 6+ gopher turtles and have new ones every year. Some have been on our property for 30 years. We have a pair of red shouldered hawks. They take care of the snakes and mice. We have bird feeders and if you feed birds you get squirrels. We have a bunny, a Grey fox, an armadillo.

Do a little Internet research for Ideas. It is fun most every day.
