I could not continue my interview because of an outstanding credit card debt from 1999. The credit card is not on any of my credit reports. Can they hold this against me?

When you take a credit it is mandatory for you to pay it back. You should pay back. If the Government comes to know of that then it is correct to refuse you an Interview and hire you since in government honest people should work, at least while in selection itself.

So please pay back instead of asking such questions.

A company can refuse employment for any reason as long as it isn't based upon race, gender or sexual orientation.

Having outstanding debts show that you are irresponsible with your personal finance which may lead the company to believe you will be irresponsible with company expenses.

Unfortunately, they probably can . When I applied for a banking job my credit history is what kept me from getting the job. your debt in this country defines who you are. It tells them if your a trustworrthy and responsible person. So, I would have to say yes! They can! That is what this country is coming to people. IF you have money , you don't have to do the time,if You do the crime. Equal rights my foot.

It sounds illegal to me... if it's not on any credit report, how did they find out about it? You may want to call the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC).
