I have a 01' Pontiac Sunfire coupe (69,100 miles) and have recently noticed a squeaking noise whenever i drive over speed bumps, railroad tracks or other bumps along the way. It's only on the right front side. Is there a recall or something that maybe could help me save money or anyone know what the problem is? It almost sounds like it needs to be lubed but we've tried that already. Didn't seem to help spraying everything! lol. Also, my whole top of the acutal engine is covered in like dark soot - oil or something... ahhh! Yeah, I should probably just take it in.

Squeaking could be from a strut---try to have someone bounce the car up and down and then see if you can pinpoint where the squeak is located or possibly the stabilizer bar bushings to the frame ---they were a problem on some of those model cars and Pontiac came out with a new design with Teflon material on the inside to prevent squeaks. Soot on the engine cover can be cleaned off by a detail shop.

The squeaking is probably from a bad strut.

The dark soot might be from oil leaking out because of a bad oil filler cap. I've seen that happen. A replacement fixed it.

The squeaking is coming from the front stut. It is most likely shot but you can take it to a shock dealer and have them take a look. The black soot is just road grim. Take your car to a car wash where they wash it for you and get them to wash the engine. Dont try it yourself unless you know what to cover up to prevent shorting out your electronics.
