Oh because some people are living in denial and the truth hurts.

2 Reasons:

1- President Carter broke a long tradition of former presidents not criticizing the present administration no matter what. (Did you ever hear Nixon, Bush 41, or Reagan criticize Clinton in public?) This tradition has been around since the beginning of the presidency. Breaking a tradition that old and that cherished is a BIG DEAL. It has to do with class and respect of the democratic system. The former president had his chance. It's not right for him to criticize a colleague.

2- It may be "obvious truth" to you, but the fact of the matter is that whether or not a President (or a movie, or a chocolate pie) is "best" or "worst" is always a matter of opionion. Many Americans think Bush 43 is the best president we ever had. How can they think that? Because they have a different set of criteria then President Carter has. You may disagree, and that's fine. It's all a matter of opinion.

Because Jimmy Carter should have kept his big mouth shut. There were no former presidents critiquing his job when all those people were hostage. There were no former presidents talking about the way there were loooongg lines at the gas pumps. There were no former presidents saying the rescue mission of the hostages should have been done different after we lost those soldiers when they were trying to rescue the hostages.
Its always been an unspoken rule that former presidents DONT meddle in the current events.
I'm a democrat, but Jimmy Carter is a NUT. I think he may be suffering from some sort of dementia.......

Mr. Carter is entitled to his opinion. It is HIS opinion and should be regarded as such. He is said to be irrelevant yet the words of someone who is so irrelevant are taken so seriously and a lot of harrumphing is going on. Is he relevant or not?

Yes, President Carter was speaking the obvious truth. Perhaps it was not in good taste or politically correct to do so while Dubya is still in office but that does not diminish the facts and he spoke them. I only wish Dubya would speak the truth for once. Sure Carter was not one of our best presidents. He was not the worst either but the one thing he was above anything else was honest.

Honest politicians, these days, often don't get far. I appreciate his honesty and Dubya could learn from him.

Since when was Jimmy Carter the voice of truth. The man who had 14% unemployment, 18% interest rates, and 18% inflation. Give me a break! He obviously is senile now. Historians do not even rank a president until 10 years after he leaves office. If Carter lives another 12 years he hopes to see someone ranked below him. Most historians rank Harding as the worst ever. Read about him and you'll understand that neither Carter nor Bush was as bad as he was.

Even Carter came off his comments. The "uproar" referred to the fact that is seems coincidental that the man most people thought of as the worst President ever, would try to put that on the current administration. Pot, meet kettle.

Because when the nation is run by liars and criminals, truth becomes a crime.

Edit: Shame on Carter for retracting.

I think the "Sunday School Teacher" forgot the lesson about bearing false witness, about remaining silent if you have nothing nice or constructive to say. I think he is now seriously back pedalling trying to once again, cover his own hind end. He apparently forgot that HIS was one of the most ineffective presidencies, be it the MX missile system VS the B-1, the 29% inflation/stagflation, the fact that a country committed an act of war against us and it went unanswered. Yeah, he says he was either misquoted or misinterpretted... Right.

Are you old enough to remember when Carter was president ? Carter was a weak president and has NO room to talk about any other president. He is irrelevant
