I am taking a home course in Cosmetology and Esthetics and there is a section on electrical appliances used but doesn't really cover much of why you should look for the UL symbol.

UL apporval means that the appliance has gone thru thorough testing to make sure:

- doesn't overheat
- works according to specification
- doesn't shock you (or your client)
- won't create a danger to you
etc

so it assures both your and your clients safety

What is a UL listing and why do I need it?

Underwriters Laboratory is a private third party testing agency that designs testing standards to which firestop materials are tested. Manufacturers of firestop build mock-up assemblies at UL and then subject them to “Burn tests.” During this test UL representatives then observe the results. If the
mock-up assembly maintains its integrity during the test procedure, it is given a “Pass” rating and then a unique UL listing number.
