mechanic don't as much as you might think. usually about 30-40,000 a year on average. you will have to buy your own tools which is about 100,000 over time and during the summer the money is okay , but you need to learn how to save, because during the winters you wont make enough to pay all of your bills. most mechanics are by flat rate or straight commission. flat is usually about 20 dollars an hour when you actually working on a vehicle, if no car is in the shop you get paid nothing. straight commission is when you get a percentage of the work you did and this way usually will pay more but most shops wont pay that way. you must love working on cars to be a mechanic. if money is a factor then maybe consider a mechanic on big rigs and they much better.

Most honest ones do not earn enough. We have to work in the heat and cold supply our own tools and take home about 20 to 25 dollars a flat rate hour. If there is no work we stand around making no money. Tools cost almost 60 to 100,000 dollars so my advice only if you love it become a mechanic. Manufacture Warranty is paying less and less.

A journeyman automotive technician with ASE certification can earn 50% of the shop labor rate of $95.00 an hour. That equates to $42.50 per hour or $1,700 per week ($88,400.00 per year).
The variables involved are that he would have to meet the book time for every job and he would have to be making a full 50%. While some mechanics can exceed the flat rate times, most start out at 25 to 35% of the labor rate.
However there are plenty of mechanics out there making in excess of $60,000 per year.

If You "planning" to "become" a Mechanic ,You are wrong.

You have to be born,to be a Mechanic.
I am a "Gear Head" my self.

most of the Mechanics,I know, are "Gear Head" ,They love What They do,is not for the Money ,in reality.

But. the mechanic has to spend thousand in tools(40,000 or more) thousands in school/class rooms(one month per year,as the new models come, not a cheap class)

saying this mechanic does $90,000.00 this year, means the net Mechanic's income after tools, schooling and taxes will be more or less $12,000.00 .........that's life.

It all depends on his abilities,
I make a pretty good living now that all my tools are paid for and I now own the shop - just normal bills now, so I would say a pretty good living once everything else is settled.

15 years auto customizing
6 years in a shop - frame tech - GM

Both were good pay, but owning my own shop obviously making more now than I was when I was in the union UAW

A lot more than I do. It cost me 1300 dollars for a torque converter. 700 dollars for a gas tank. And over 500 dollars for brakes and inspection. Go figure. I had to get loans to pay for car repairs.
