I borrowed my friend's car and have managed to get the key stuck in the ignition. There are two keys for this car, one is the manufacturer's key and one is a regular key you can have made anywhere. The situation is the key locked in the ignition is the one you can get anywhere and I am under the impression it is either not made 100% correctly or due to security purposes for the car that it does not recognize the car it won't start. I mean it does start for a split second, then the security light pops on and shuts it down.
Now, the question:
Why does the keys get stuck and what can I do to get them out?

The 1st thing you should do is see if there is a release button on the steering column. That could be the reason the key won't come out. The release button will release it. The second is that the factory key has a computer chip in it to start the car. The spare key should have been made at a reliable locksmith for about 20 dollars and then it would work. Also ask your friend if he/she has ever had this problem before. If not then it could be a lot of other reasons that the car doesn't start. Oh, My advice to you is don't borrow anything. If you wanna dance you have to pay the band. If you wanna borrow you have to pay the man. that's a Rocky quote.

It could be that because of the key not being from the auto maker that it is causing a problem. However, it is also a very common problem with the Grand Prix's to get the key stuck in the ignition due to a bad shifter assembly. To get the key out, use one of two tricks. First, tilt the steering wheel completely up, stick your fingers palm facing towards you under the steering wheel just a bit towards the right from the middle of the column. You should feel a button, push back with your finger to depress the button, reach around with your other hand and turn the key to get it out.

Or secondly, tilt the steering wheel up, looking underneath the steering wheel you should see a clip (or the clip could already be gone, remove it if it is not) then taking either a pen, screwdriver, or something straight poke it through the hole, this will depress the release button and then with your other hand turn the key.

The real key has a code in it that shuts off the security system in the car, you need to reset it and use the right key.

put the car in neutral (with your foot on the brake!), turn the steering wheel until it unlocks and take the key out
