There are three ways to cite a dissertation according to pages 260-262 of the APA Style Guide, 5th ed. Here they are:
For a doctoral dissertation abstracted in Dissertation Abstracts International (DAI) and obtained from a university:
Ross, D.F. (1990). Unconscious transference and mistaken identity: When a witness misidentifies a familiar but innocent person from a lineup (Doctoral dissertation, Cornell University, 1990). Dissertation Abstracts International, 51, 417.
(Formatting note: Indent second line and put "Dissertation Abstracts International, 51" in italics).
For an unpublished doctoral dissertation:
Wilfley, D. E. (1989). Interpersonal analysis of bulimia: Normal-weight and obese. Unpublished doctoral dissertation, University of Missouri, Columbia.
(Formatting note: "Interpersonal analysis of bulimia: Normal-weight and obese" should be italicized; don't forget to indent second line).
Doctoral dissertation abstracted in Dissertation Abstracts International (DAI) and obtained from UMI:
Bower, D. L. (1993). Employee assistant programs supervisory referrals: Characteristics of referring and nonreferring supervisors. Dissertation Abstracts International, 54 (01), 534B. (UMI No. 9315947).
(Formatting note: "Dissertation Abstract International, 54" should be italicized; don't forget to indent).
