will I become less able to do turns/spins when I change back to suede soled shoes? and are there other drawbacks of continuing to dance with resin soled shoes? I do find it slightly slippery on the wooden floor, and very slippery on carpet.

No, you won't become less able to do spins/turns when you switch back. However, you are risking an injury if the sole is too sticky. With sticky sole, the tendecy is to rotate within a jont (knee, instep) rather than pivoting on the floor surface. Just make sure the sole is not too sticky.

I find it hard to get the right traction out of anything else other than suede sole or dance sneaker's sole. Without the right traction, the road to success is longer.

Chances are, these shoes are not designed for Latin dancing and therefore won't encorage you to have the correct posture. That's another possible drawback. Also, how hard can you point your foot in them? You want to be able to fully point your foot in oder to develop proper tchnique and create good lines.

By dancing in certain type of shoes you get used to dancing in them. They become your "one and only". It will be hard to switch back for that reason.

But if you find them comfortable - by all means dance in them. Try and see how it feels. If you feel that you dance better in them - you can use them.

Last but not least - they must be non-marking, or the studio owner will be very unhappy. Black resin or rubber tends to leave black marks on the floor.

I doubt anyone will let you wear tennis shoes to ballroom dancing. You have to wear "performance shoes". They are those t-strap heels from the 40's. Call the place in your town that carries ballet slippers and point shoes. They will have what you need and can also answer your questions about what soles can be worn but most dance studios won't let just any kind of shoe on their flooring. They say it could mess the floor up. Good luck with it.

Just keep dancing in whatever is comfortable to the rhythm on what ever surface. I'm crazy about the latin dances because they have so much passion and drama for life !

it shouldn't affect your ability

just be aware of your shoes and make compensations depending on the pair you are wearing. i would stick with the suede. you have a connection with the floor.
