I have lots and lots of brown spots this year.

Assuming you have decent grass already.....There are only three things you need to do for a "good" lawn
1. Fertilize regularly...every 5 weeks.
2. Water regularly...twice a week for 20 minutes.
3. Mow regularly...twice a week if needed.
As you notice "regularly" shows up in all of the above. Mowing is very important. It will help keep any weeds down that appear. I mow my yard at least once a week and sometime twice.

Watering. rake out the bad sections reseed the lawn.
Keep the pets off the lawn. Many things.
