Do I need a kit? I have also seen the top plate and the front, what pieces do I need?

There is a 3 sided skirt, a top cover and a strap.
All you need to install it is a 7/16ths deep socket.

There are two. The side and top. As mentioned you need to be sure the top fits and has the rubber insulator, so, you not have problems. Be sure it made for your Sportster and it the correct battery for the bike.
When I had my Super-Glide it was a Candy Apple Red with a fine gold metal-flake. I used a Budweiser can and cut to fit and I kept the original black top cover. It looked really good and I "never" saw another on a bike, so, it was one of a kind as many people would say.
So, chrome can look great, my bike had plenty, along with Gold Plating. But, sometimes a little creativity can be more personal.

they may look cool to you now
i thought that stuff was cool when i first started riding.
but the truth is they tend to short out the battery.
and rattle
for that reason a clean battery looks really good

i have had two sportsters two shovels a pan
and many custom evo choppers..
i build very nice customs
you will never see a battery cover on any of them

cheap chrome covers look cheap
