Coupla things:

Reply to kookoo - the gov't during the Clinton years was able to achieve a balanced yearly budget (annual deficit), to the point where there was a modest surplus at the end of each FY. National debt (federal deficit) was still huge under Clinton, but falling, ie., there was a yearly budget surplus, but the overall national debt was still in the trillions.

And a large part of your taxes go to servicing the interest on this debt.

About credit counseling for our darling lawmakers - you're right, both parties are as guilty as sin when it comes to waste, porkbarrel spending and idiocy (by that I mean loading pallets of $100 bills onto C47s and flying it to Iraq). Although if someone bombed me with bricks of money, I would definitely complain less.

I don't know that having a 720 to qualify for a seat in Congress would help-

Maybe having them take a class in basic economics? Or spending a few weeks in the pokey with Paris Hilton? Electric shock therapy?

What good is the President's credit rating when our own House and Congress is filled to the brim with people who have credit problems, spend other peoples money, criminal records etc. Politics at that high of a lever are just legalized criminals.
And you're right BOTH parties are just as guilty as the other.

Electing officials with high credit scores wouldn't make a difference, because it's not their money. People spend other people's money very differently than their own. (Actually it's closer to $9 trillion. I think we should institute a 5% national sales tax which would be used exclusively, by law, to pay down the national debt.)

We should elect people with little or no experience, for it is those who have experience who have spent us into this.

We also need to severely limit the terms of Senators and Representatives, so we don't have another Robert Byrd, who has succeeded in moving most of the federal government to West Virginia in his nearly 50 years in the US Senate (no joke here; he was first elected in 1958, before a vast majority of the people on Yahoo Answers were even born).

Interesting thought, but I don't think it would work. Reason: they're spending someone else's money, not their own.

Have you ever been given someone else's money to spend? At least when I'm in that situation, I tend to be a bit more liberal. I used to work for a company that paid for my meals when traveling. The limit was $30, so I pretty much looked for the best meal I could get for just under $30---because it wasn't my money.

that's illegitimate. the federal government has a Civil provider equipment. different than for political appointments, there's a aggressive equipment in place utilizing attempting out, resumes, and interviews to make certain who gets employed, fired, or promoted. this technique is in place at maximum state and native stages. Palin looks to have a history of abusing this technique and is at the instant under study for it.

No, they should elect only officials that understand and revere the Constitution. Basically, that would exclude 99% of our current Congress.

So why not vote for people who have had to live under a budget for most of their lives. Who know what it is like to work, pay taxes, and decide that they CAN"T afford that new car, vacation, or even new summer clothes. There are candidates like that out there. Google "ray4vp"

As most politicians are independently wealthy, we already do. The problem is that they don't see it as "our" money, see it as "someone else's" money.

This chart is somewhat eye opening, points to the incredible lack of fiscal responsibility of the Bush administration.

Dems = high credit scores. They know how to turn a bad economy around. Remember Clinton, who gave us A SURPLUS of TRILLIONS after the mess the first BUSH left us in.
