First, he probably doesn't know the answer. Most doctors are woefully ignorant of alternative therapies.
Also, you have to understand that they actually put themselves at risk if they even appear to recommend a therapy. The American Medical Association has sanctioned...even pulled the licenses of doctors in the past.
Finally, there is a concerted effort going on, especially from the pharmaceutical industry and the FDA, to give alternative therapies a bad name. They do everything they can to stigmatize the whole industry.
I'd bet your doctor's response is a result of some combination of the above reasons.

Often, doctors are ignorant as to the benefits of anything outside what the Food and Drug Administration approves. Also, they get no kickbacks from pharmaceutical companies if people don;t buy medications. Doctors have long been investing in these drug companies, and, in fact, representatives from these drug companies regularly visit doctors with new products which are quickly pushed on patients.
The real problem is that all too many of the newer medications developed over the past 20 years have been IMPROPERLY tested and results are very faulty, according to Gary Null, PhD, scientists, who has written many books and who has a radio show on 91.5 FM daily at noon in NY.

Bottom line is, natural remedies, abundant as they are, put modern meds out of business when it comes down to it. What's more profitable? To treat someone with cancer, or to tell them beforehand to drink some cranberry juice, which is anti-cancer, to help prevent it? If you suffered from vertigo, would the doctor prescribe you valium, a controlled substance, or enlighten you on the benefits of shitake, a natural antivert? Why, you ask? What was the chorus of pro wrestler Ted Dibiase's entrance theme? "Money, Money, Money, Money, Moneeeeeee-ee-ee-eeeeeeey"

Your doctor was not trained in the area of natural remedies and so he may simply be unable to advise you about them.
You'd be best speaking to an alternative therapist who has the knowledge to advise you.
I'm a nutritionist if I can be of any help.

Some doctors just aren't open minded to things they don't know about and others don't want to loose money when it's not used on anti-biotics, pain killers or sugery.

Because they represent a fiction. What is natural anyway? As opposed to what, "unnatural" remedies? Where do you think FDA approved medicines come from anyway -- largely from naturally occurring substances. Yes, there are remedies based on synthetic solutions -- but what makes anybody think that these are intrinsically more harmful than natural materials? Arsenic is natural -- go have a few teaspoons. The death-cap mushroom is natural -- go and munch down a few.

He was not trained in that field and he feels threatened somehow. I would get a more open minded doctor.

Because doctors have been trained to be drug peddlers for the FDA -- and the FDA doesn't want to cure you -- they want to keep you sick ! Why ? $$$$$$
