So I would like to know what people think of having it mandatory for businesses to be closed 2 days a week....It wouldn't necesarily have to be the weekend but 2 days in a week would have millions of less cars traveling to work, mall, grocery stores, etc...It would make people unwillingly have to find other things to do with their time....and gase money....this would reduce the CO contributions into the atmosphere....another plus maybe people would find more family time like the good old days when things shut down at 5pm and weren't open 24/7....Oh ya I forgot that those big complanies have quota's to make and forget the warming of the earth....If businesses even closed at 6 pm every nite just think of the energy saved just shutting the lights off, having cooler temperatures in buildings after hours and not having people driving around aimlessly. Hey it might even help with the crime blight.....wow what a great concept.....just think the simple good ole days....will we ever see it???

There are many communities that function this way....I am from a small town in northern minnesota and they don't have groceries open 24/7....they don't have banks open on weekends....they may have an extended retail day on wednesday but that is about it....you plan and executed your life more and get done more using less....The only things open on Sunday are your hospitals, police, and church....maybe you do take a car load of family to the beach but is that bad???? You aren't running kids to 25 different ball games then to Walmart and then you've run time so you need to call the pizza guy....it is all chain reaction.

I think these are good ideas and many will be implemented as energy prices increase. Daylight savings time was extended to save energy during the 1970's and it has been again. These measures can add up:

"Energy Savings - will possibly save 100,000 barrels of oil daily. People will turn interior and exterior lights on later in the day which will save electricity. Lighting for evening sports events can be turned on one hour later"

What would you do those two days? Go to the mall (oops - Closed). Mandatory closing of businesses is a really bad idea, but the goal of reducing commuting days has merit.

My own company allows me to work from home. So instead of commuting into the office 5 days, I only go in three (sometimes fewer if I can arrange things). That saves me a lot of time and money. My company saves too because I share my office space with another part-time telecommuter. We have actually dropped expensive office space while increasing the workforce because of telecommuting.

Another option is longer work days, but fewer of them. Another company here in town shutters their entire plant every other Friday, but everyone still works a 40 hour week. Saves money and the employees love it.

You could extend this model to schools. Stretch the school day about 1.5 to 2 hours and do the school week in 4 days. Ever notice how much better traffic is when schools are closed?

I can think of lots of other ways to reduce use of cars and gas other than telling businesses that they can't operate.

I don't have a problem with energy conservation, but global warming is a farce.
Businesses closing for two days during the week!
It won't happen. We are lazy now a days and want simplistic convience. So you can dream on about eliminating two days from the work week.

What a joke! Global Warming was invented by Al Gore, along with the internet.

Nope, we won't see those days again. But it is possible to be thrown back to the stone age by our own technological insatiability
