I am a teacher in an urban school in SC. My principal gives out $10 cash incentives for students who make the honor roll, do well on tests, etc. The problem that it has caused, which he does not see, is that the other awards given to students for achievement (like certificates and ribbons, like we had in school) hold no weight anymore. Students just complain that they didn't get any cash and they don't want a "stupid certificate". I am on track to becoming an administrator myself and was wondering from any experts, or non-experts out there what they thought of this. I'm interested to hear your responses.

The thing that the kids hate the most, is when there are more than a handful of students tied to get the cash incentive. In that case, he divides on persons prize money up among all the winning students, and sometimes they end up only getting 1 dollar or less, which pisses them off. Should I say something to this guy?

I need some feedback on this. My principal is the type of guy, well, he's a narcissist. thinks everyone is out to get him and thinks what he does is the best. He has a rep of being not well liked in the district but he sees it the other way. He thinks people love him but are out to get him because he thinks hes so successful. so, I really can't talk to him. Just want peoples opinions.

Because you can't control the principle try talking sense to the kids. When they gripe to you just ask them what they think of the principles technique? Ask them what would be the most valuable reward? Do they want 10 bucks now or do they want to have a high paying job later in life? Do they want enough money to buy half of a t-shirt, or do they want to know that they are raising their social opportunities by joining the educated masses of the world? Point out that the cash system will always be unfair so they shouldn't put all their efforts into getting the handout, but instead to reach for personal excellence to spite the unfair game. Also, it will be a fact that some students will have unfair advantage to getting the cash prize. Why try to play in an unfair game? Appeal to the logic and understanding of the students themselves and teach them to avoid such baby prizes in life and to reach beyond the ten bucks to the thousands that they can get for themselves.

Maybe you could plant the seeds of a student protest, or at least a student counsil about this situation. Help them to fight their own fight.

Yes. find out where it is coming from...if it is the school's budget then it is wrong! Also it should be fair across the board how much you get and not divided up amongst 10 students. If he is willing to fork over 10 bucks of his own money for the honor roll, then EACH student that makes the honor roll should get the 10.00...doesnt seem equitable.

If you feel so strongly about this, you should bring it to your Principal's attention. Where is the money coming from? Is it his own money or that of the taxpayers? His heart is certainly in the right place, but it's obvious this practice is backfiring and sooner or later there are going to be parental complaints.

That's terrible. Didn't you contact the police? Do you have witnesses that would support your version of events? Don't know how the law is over in the USA but surely you can do something, sue her even.
