Like on star trek when they get beamed to other destinations.

You are asking about teleportation. That's what they do on star trek.

It's possible - but only with inidivdual atoms or photons of light.

No-one has managed to teleport anything bigger than single atoms or particles of light. It's extremly unlikely that it will be achieved in our lifetimes ... if ever :)

I believe it will be possible. The first application of the development of such technology will be the transportation of mass amount of fluids, and solid materials from one place to another. Granted, these materials will probably be simple materials without complexed molecular structure but, it will be the place that other developement will continue from. The technology is centries into the future if it is that soon. The general idea is simple. Breaking down atomic structure in a trasmitable format, transmitting, then reconstituting teh transmitted. It then is a matter of what atomic partical belongs on what part of the carrier wave of the radio/or microwave transmitter. Another additive to the complexity, is actually getting the particals on the carrier wave. However, if modern modems can convert digital signals into anolog, and analog into digital signals, then other parts of a "transporter" is a matter of time. Side note on this: If it will require the power produced from anti-matter generators, then it should interest all that a few anti-matter atoms had been produced. It took more energy to produce those few anti-atoms then they could produce themselves, but it does illistrate that Star-Trek to Star Wars technologies are not entirely impossible.

You would have to scan the object to be transported, beam that information to another site, and use the information to construct an exact replica of the original object, molecule by molecule.

Isn't 3d printing a step toward being able to transport electronic representation of material to physical form over electronic media?

Well we don't know
at the moment it is not except in Sci-fi
It may be possible in the future though but we don't know.

I think it's possible obviously, but not in the following one hundred years.
Because there are some theories to support this, but it's so hard to put into practice up to now.
The movie "FLY" is just talk about this.

if you mean transport of molecules in biological media, this occurs in all living species
The transporting enzymes are called kinases

Yes. that is how chemical reactions work, such as chemicals moving through cell membranes.
