Hamilton began wearing his now-trademark protective mask to preserve his ability to participate in the 2004 NBA Playoffs. He has continued to wear the mask in the wake of three reconstructive surgeries which are said to have left him without nose cartilage and vulnerable to a career-ending injury. He also told ESPN reporters that he wears the mask for good luck.

No it's not for entertainment purposes he wears that mask because if he gets one just one more blow to his face that injurs his nose, Richard Hamilton's carrer is over,s o in order for him not to get hit in the face he wears to help protect against severe blows to the face that are career ending. And we wouldn't want that would we? He a good player and we need him down here in the Motorcity.

"Rip" wears" the mask not so much to prevent a career ending injury but it's because after all the surgeries his nose has so little cartilage that if it gets broken again he has nothing left in the nasal cavity for doctors to perform a reconstruction upon. His nose would essentially cave in, or he would need to have nasal inserts to build his nose structure again.

It is superstition mostly with him. He had a REAL good game when he came back from the broken nose and hasn't removed the mask since. For games that is. Just like a super hero. :)

He's had his nose broken like 3 times. Also, he claims he's worn it for so long now that he' used to it and since it provides protection he decided to keep wearing it.

Protect his nose and for superstition because they were winning when he put it on so he likes to still wear it

i think it's to protect his face. i heard somewhere he already lost much of the cartilage in his nose because of a nose injury. i'm not sure

Probably got used to it and has played better with it on. Given that, someone probably threatened to break his nose if he took it off.
