I don't understand the ruling o this. Usually they shoot two from the line, but what kind of foul does it take for them to get to shoot one and one?

It only occurs in college and below. One and one happens when the team fouls are between six and nine. When a team reaches 10 fouls, then they shoot two shots.

This only applies for college and highschool. A team is allowed only 6 fouls in each half for the whole team before they go into what is called the "bonus". Once they reach that 7th foul :bonus", then everytime someone is fouled when not shooting they get to shoot one and one. Then if the team reaches 10 fouls they are in what is called the "double bonus". This means that no matter what kinda foul it is, they get two shots. Hope this helps

In college, the 7th through 9th team foul in a half where the player fouled was not in the act of shooting. Shooting fouls are two shots (unless the shot was made, when it's one) no matter how many team fouls there are.

It doesn't happen anymore in the NBA. It used to be that when a player is fouled by a team already in the penalty, and he is not in the act of shooting, he gets the one and one.
