A postulate (in terms of a proof) is defined as an intial assumption from which subsequent conclusions are derived. A postulate may be self-evident, but it may also be a statement that is simply put forward without proof. A postulate is essentially the same thing as an axiom. They are not proven because they are accepted as fundamentally true. The phrase "begging the question" refers to claiming some aspect of the conclusion as a postulate, which invalidates the proof. Postulates must be reasonable; otherwise, we are abusing the opportunity to claim unproven statements.
