Well, according to Adams' books it is, but then according to Adams, in his own words, he "looked out the window and though 'OK, 42 will do'".
So it's really a joke. I like to joke around with it with my friends every time I see a 42 around somewhere, and I see the number 42 rather frequently... Oh look, there it is on my user nickname!
But seriously, the number, in my opinion, is just awesome. I mean, a four and a two. What more could you ask for?
