No, Oprah does not need to increase her popularity. Rosie used to do the same thing when she had her own talk show on NBC, Regis and Kelly- that has always been a part of the show for as long as I can remember. Some of the others probably yes.

I think they give away gifts because its good advertising for the companies who provide the gifts. If they give out, say, Sony radios then Sony gets the advertising and the sense of good will for being the radio that was given away. It also helps create good will for the show, itself.

It probably does attract more audience when people know things are given away.

There could also be tax benefits for giving away certain gifts.

Someone like Oprah may also just think its fun to give things to people who have come to see the show. There could be some element of just doing something nice for the people who show up. Its a very common thing for people who get people together for one reason or another to offer little gifts. People who go to certain business events get gifts, groups of people who go to school events sometimes are given little gifts, etc.

Chances are the arrangement between a show and the company who makes the gifts possible ends up being a win/win situation; but if you add in that the audience gets a gift it becomes a win/win/win situation.

some might give stuff for the reason you said, but oprah has always given out of the goodness of her heart instead of buying people. although, as mentioned, it is an advertising ploy for manufacturers to get free play by some big name giving away their stuff. you can tell the true generosity if they just give stuff away without mention of the brand or what it's for. i remember an episode of oprah where some kid was crying because her family had no means to send her to school, she played the part well because oprah wound up helping her out. i had to find this out as she is not one that would say to the audience 'i put this girl through school'. that's not her game. as for others.....
