One of two things... If I knew them in some way, simply "Shut up" should do it.

If you are in a professional environment, where you somewhat care about a working relationship, take a more passive approach, (at least at first) and a "leave me alone" a time or three should do it.

Or, in cases where you encounter a stranger whom you have never met, yet, decides it is you they want to pick on.. Male or female an 'appropriate' statement might just be: "I don't know you. I don't talk to people I don't know. This conversation is over." Something along those lines should do. Today, I had to tell someone who was pestering me in a parking lot: "Hey, I don't know you, and I don't talk to strange people in a parking lot." Followed by, "I don't have money or a cell phone, I have nothing of use to you."

By all means, I feel rude people suck, so I know where you're coming from. Trying to be nice usually only makes them angrier, so, keeping it quick and have something to say ahead of time helps to de-escalate the situation and 'buy' you the time to get away.

HIH, and Good Luck!

It's impossible to slay the dragons of ignorance, so why bother giving them the time of day?

I would politely ask them to not speak to me that way. If they continued I would add that if they keep speaking in that way, that I would end the conversation. If they still kept at it, I would say "Sorry you feel that way," and walk away....

I always am flabbergasted when people are rude to me. I always ask them if they are serious.
