Portrayed heavily in the television and soap operas, all glamour and glitz are attributed to Jakarta and other big cities, but mainly Jakarta.
Hence, people in large numbers go there to try their luck to be able to get the Indonesian dream = filthy reach, making it fast.
There is a saying, "In Jakarta, anything can be made into money". This reflects the psychological mindset and perception that some people have toward Jakarta.

Because it's the capital city of Indonesia. It's where the money is.
Jakarta is the central of everything: economy, education, lifestyle, etc.
Lots of people from outside Jakarta migrate to the city in a hope of making more money thus have a better life. Big companies all have their office in Jakarta, so many neighboring cities commutes everyday.
It also have the best universities, shops, restaurants, clubs, and you can reach Jakarta by car, train, airplanes, and sea ships. It's a very accessible city.

Because Jakarta is the capital and one of the biggest city. People from the urban area thought that in the big city there will be many opportunities. Beside that, Jakarta is the most advance city in Indonesia. So it has anything that urban area peoples could ever dream... Every years many people from urban area move to Jakarta making the city more crowd from year to year... That also make the rate of crimes is more higher...

The whole of Indonesia is sloping downwards to Jakarta, so people find it easier to walk down there and are too tired to walk all the way back up.
