It sounds like this will be your first time being put under. Rarely as human beings do we ever have to face our greatest fear and mine was of being put under. And I had a hard time believing others that I "wouldn't feel a thing." The reality is that I have had no less than ten operations now, the last of which was two of my last four surgeries to remove cataracts from both of my eyes. But it wasn't until the tenth one that I approached the anesthesiologists needle without fear. There are things you can do to put you more at ease about the whole process. At first, I just closed my eyes so that I couldn't see a thing, but now a shot of Versed is all I need to put my mind at ease. Actually, there is no sense of a loss of time experienced when you are put under and you'll be amazed at how quickly relative time passes before its over. Good luck and don't let anyone tell you that you shouldn't be nervous though. Because your life is literally in someone else's hands. I hope this helps you...

I have been put under 2 times and I work in a hospital.. They will ask you to count backwards from 100. I usually make it to 97 or so .. You go under pretty quick.. After that I didn't remember anything until I woke up in recovery. In recovery you will have monitors on you to check your blood pressure, heart rate, and your oxygen levels. You may also have on an oxygen mask. Afterwards it is normal to be sleepy.. The best thing is to just sleep in off.. Hope that helps

A mask is put over your nose and you are asked to count. You will probably be "under" in just several seconds. You will not feel anything. You may be groggy for a while after the procedure.

I was not given a mask, my anesthesia was administered by a needle in a "pick line." That is the way intravenous medicines are given to someone. You can ask your doctor what to expect when you have your surgery.
I don't know how long I was out, but I don't remember anything about it.

After two or three seconds, you are out like a light. I remember getting to eight, counting back from ten, after the mask was on my face. I woke up after the procedure was done, feeling the morphine rather intensely. I had no problems whatsoever.

about two hours i was out for. it was awesome. your mouth is soooo dry when you wake up! but you are completely out!! i loved it! i had a shocking operation too ( for a male) but being out of it was just the best! it wasnt the mask that puts you out...its the syringe of milky stuff they put in your arm, and yeah it takes about 30 seconds to take effect. you'll love it! just relax and enjoy it! 1,000's of people have it done every day
