I'm troubleshooting an old machine. At start-up, the screen displays text that is all gibberish (looks like encrypted text). Cannot go any further after that. I suspect that the BIOS is corrupt but I'm not very sure. Any idea what the problem is, and suitable solutions.

Seeing that you don't KNOW your BIOS is corrupt, I suggest you first check if your graphics card isn't the component that causing the problems. (Take it out, clean it, put it back in; if it still doesn't work, try another card if you have one.) Because a BIOS problem is harder to fix than a graphics card problem...

Yup, sound like a corrupted BIOS, if its an old machine, I wont waste time fixing it, as you will have a hell of a job looking for a replacement BIOS.

Apparently your BIOS chip seems to be the cause of the problem, however, you should get your system checked by an expert to identify the fault.
