Well people can be smarter on travel. And buy a car that fit what you do. ie: don't buy for a status symbol. This seems to be a big problem for us in America. I own a truck, but i also use it to haul stuff and i need 4 wheel drive for the places i drive out in Montana. But people who own a hummer and live in a city and have never taken it off road do not need a hummer. Having better public transportation would be a plus too. Too many people do not use it. Having a train system that is worth a crap would be good. People in Europe use them and they keep a good schedule there too. Also in Europe they use more diesel engines in vehicles. They get better gas mileage than gasoline engines and put out less carbon dioxide. Especially now with new technology diesel engines are quieter and could be used in cars with out being so annoying. The problem with diesel in the US is it is seen as powering semi trucks and the smoke they put out. Usually the ones that put out more smoke either are old or are having problems. But mostly people just need to be more responsible and not so stuck up on their appearance to society.
