I think this is better than risking over clocking. I have seen 5600 used only with AM2 socket, but my motherboard is 939 socket. Suggestions/comments

For your socket 939, your upgrade options are limited to the following:
X2 4600, 2.4ghz (Manchester)
X2 4800, 2.4Ghz (Toledo)
FX 62, 2.8Ghz (Toledo)

Personally, I think the performance gain is not that spectacular and hardly worth the upgrade expense. Overclocking is not risky if you have good cooling and you stay at or near stock voltages. Processors get fried when overvolted and/or have inadequate cooling. Cooling is really the key to fantastic overclocks.

Unfortunately they are not pin compatible :( But if you really must upgrade the processor the AMD 64 X2 4800+ would be the fastest processor for the 939 socket that I know of. Even then it is only 200MHz faster then the 4200 thought the 4800 does have twice the amount of cache of the 4200 at 1MB... So if you really want to squeeze the most out of that mobo that would be the only option. But I personally wouldn't bother with it...

I would suugest change your motherboard to an AM2 model also, gives you a better upgrade path later, the S939 is now dead, so upgrading is more expensive and a dead-end.

The 5600 CPU (if there were a S939 model) would have cost around $180, that money is better spent elsewhere, if you want performance, get a low end Core2Due like the E4300/E4400, as they run at 800FSB, they are so overclockable, just changing the FSB to 1066 and you have a superfast PC at a fraction of the cost.
