Yesterday I posted a question about hair washing and I said that I'd washed my hair about three times this year - not at all in the past three months and I was told that I must stink.
Believe me, if I did, my colleagues - who often have their nose very near my head would soon tell me, two weeks ago one of my male colleagues even asked if I'd been to the hairdressers as my hair looked lovely.
I'm not a slob nor am I lazy, I have bottles of Herbal Essences shampoo and conditioner in the bathroom with more in the cupboard but I decided to test out the theory that after six weeks of not putting chemicals on your head, your hair's natural oils take over and it becomes thicker, fuller and more manageable.
When I did wash it every other day, I looked like Einstein, it was thin, very flyway and no amount of hairspray could keep it down.
Now, I haven't reported anyone for their answers, not even a thumbs down but I was offended and that's hard to do.

It is true that it's not good for your hair to wash it too much, it strips it of the natural oils, goes dry and greasy hair gets greasier, my Hairdresser told me this. Apparently if you leave it long enough it actually cleanses itself and the condition improves. I couldn't wash my hair for a few weeks when I was very ill in hospital and strangely enough it didn't get to look dirty at all. The problem is some people use so many products every day on their hair that it has to be washed to prevent a build up. I only wash my hair once a week, I try not to use gel etc unless it's really needed and my hair is in fantastic condition. You wash it when it suits you as long as it doesn't look dirty what's the problem!

That's some great info. I've already stopped using conditioner in favour of organic oils, but I didn't know your hair took care of itself if you left it alone. Might try that. I've always wondered why kid's hair stays so good even if they rarely wash it and never use conditioner. Also wondered what the hell people did before we invented shampoo. Thanks for bringing it up, I'll check the other question you posted.
What kind of hair maintenance do you do? And how did you get throught the first couple of weeks before your hair adjusted? I think my hair would start getting greasy and smelly after the first week.

There is something to be said about overwashing your hair, and that is that its actualy quite bad for you.
Everybodys different, thats why there hundreds of different types of shampoes! some people swear by washing there hair everyday, but that can dry it out and make it worse.
Also the products you use make things a lot different, I swear by muds and clay to keep my (short) hair in place and without looking greasey.
People are very quick to pass judgement without knowing very much at all about someone situation, if you say you only need to wash your hair every three months your hair is propbably alot more managable and keeps itself cleaner (like you said about natural oils and greeses) im also guessing you propably dont work in a contaminated enviroment either.

Eh, don't take it so seriously. No matter what or where you post, there's always people who troll the boards looking to start something with people. More than likely them posting nasty comments is the highlight of their day, & that's pretty sad.
I am curious about your hair. I've heard about this, & I read one article where the lady in question had extremely long hair. Did you have to purchase a special brush to stimulate the hair oils? (The lady in the article purchased all sorts of special brushes & what not.)

Dont be offended hun...I have learned that people will say nasty things all the time and If you are easily offended then maybe you should not be on this site because its an everyday occurance. Im not saying this to be mean, but I felt the same and someone also told me this and nowadys I just chillax and have fun and let the rude, mean people be just that. You cant wish them away and there will always be someone who passes a rude comment, just hold your head high and enjoy your time here.

I did not see the question you posted yesterday. I will look later.
Your experiment sounds interesting, never thought it was possible to not wash your hair for so long, but now I think of it Indian's don't wash their hair so much either.
I wash my hair too often then, sometimes twice a day. I'm going to try it myself.

I actually heard that not washing your hair is supposed to be very good for it - however being a natural curly wurly head - that opts to ghd the crap outta it into being straight - I have to wash and condition mine regularly!
I certainly wouldnt call you smelly or anything like that though - if you find not washing your hair works for you - then more power to you girl! At the end of the day - its your hair!!

I have to agree with you......... the less you wash your hair the better condition it will be. you have to remember though that there are a lot of thoughtless children - or should I say child like people on Y! Answers that get enjoyment out of making people feel bad. Look at my most recent Q for example!
Have a great day! xo

I had a few weird looks when I told my work colleagues that I dont wash my face with soap.
But my face doesnt ever look dirty, I dont have any spots and no sign of any wrinkles yet.
I've heard it ages your skin using products on it. Oh, and I've heard the theory about hair that you're trying out too, but I'm not quite ready to give that one a whirl yet. Glad its working for you. x

They were probably just jealous. Not many people are that lucky. An old friend of mine followed much the same routine, (she was Chinese, so naturally had very straight, dark hair) and her hair always looked great. When she tried to tell people her secret, they never believed her!
